Le Tour De France 2019: Review

Mike Teunissen - First Stage Winner

In its early days, it was mainly competed by French riders, but over the years gained global recognition and has become the world’s most iconic bike race.

It is primarily situated in France but has been known from time to time to venture into neighbouring countries. 2019 commenced in Brussels, Belgium and ended on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

The 2019 Tour went predominantly through the East of France, as the stages went through Reims, Nancy, The Pyrenes, Toulouse, The French Alps, ending in Paris.

Podium Finish

The title was taken by Colombian Egan Bernal, followed by Welsh teammate Geraint Thomas (2018 Le Tour De France Winner). We were stoked to cheer Lekker’s fellow dutchmen Steven Kruijswijk rounded out the top 3 with a podium finish. Kruijswijk is well known for his strong performance across the mountain stages of bike races. He finished only 1.31 behind the Yellow Jersey winner Egan Bernal.

Historically, Kruijswijk is only the 9th dutchmen in history to finish on the podium.

He was super close to winning the 2016 Giro d’Italia in 2016 until he had an unfortunate crash into a snow bank, which proved costly.

We are already looking forward to the 2020 installment, to see if Steven can close the gap and win the 2020 Le Tour De France.

Dutch History In 2019

In addition to Kruijswijk, there was another standout performance by Dutchmen Mike Teunissen who won the first stage of the Tour.

Teunissen was not seen as a favourite going into the first stage but narrowly edged the win ahead of Slovakian Peter Sagan and Australian Caleb Ewan.

It was the first time in 30 years that a rider from the Netherlands had won the first stage.

Surprisingly, since it inception in 1903, only two Dutch riders have ever won the Le Tour De France

  • Joop Zoetemelk in 1980
  • Jan Jansen in 1968

Hopefully, 2020 is a year to look forward to in Dutch Cycling.
